Must-Watch Films with Oscar-Winning Actors

Since 1929 and up to the present day, the American Film Award Oscar has been given to a select few lucky individuals and films that have left an indelible mark on the seventh art. Over time, it has undoubtedly become this beloved medium's most recognizable symbol of excellence.

The small golden statue truly signifies life in film, and below, we present a few outstanding films featuring Oscar-winning actors currently available on the streaming service Pickbox NOW!

A Bronx Tale

Lorenzo (Robert De Niro) is a modest and hardworking bus driver and a father worried about the future of his nine-year-old son Calogero (Lillo Brancato Jr. and Francis Capra), who spends his free time on the tough streets of New York's Bronx, increasingly dreaming of a life on the other side of the law.

One day, when he accidentally witnesses a murder committed by the charismatic local mobster Sonny (Chazz Palminteri), Calogero decides to lie to the police, and a friendship begins to develop between him and the hardened criminal, which cautious Lorenzo sees as a great threat looming over his family.

Excellently acted, visually impressive, and skillfully crafted, the crime drama A Bronx Tale surprised many upon its release in 1993, largely due to the legendary American actor proving himself to be excellent behind the camera as well. It remains a late classic within the mafia subgenre that must be watched at least once!

A Room with a View

The year is 1907, and young Englishwomen Lucy (Helena Bonham Carter) and her cousin Charlotte (Maggie Smith) are staying at the Bertolini pension in Florence, where during one dinner they meet Mr. Emerson (Denholm Elliott) and his quiet but charming son George (Julian Sands), whom Lucy quickly starts to fall in love with.

However, just when everything starts to look like the beginning of another beautiful love story, Lucy returns to England. She becomes engaged to the wealthy and quite pretentious Cecil, brilliantly portrayed by multiple Oscar-winner Daniel Day-Lewis. Moreover, the whole complicated situation is further entangled by the news that Mr. Emerson will soon be moving into Lucy's neighborhood, which will unexpectedly turn her daydreams of meeting George again into reality...

Disarmingly warm, emotionally deep, and lavishly produced, the British romantic drama A Room with a View from 1985, directed by James Ivory, is one of those films that will stay with you long after watching!

The Name of the Rose

In the dark Middle Ages, a great tragedy occurs in a quite serene Benedictine monastery in Italy.

A young monk commits suicide, and the sharp-witted Franciscan friar William of Baskerville (the famous Sean Connery) and his young assistant Adso of Melk (Christian Slater) are tasked with uncovering the mysterious circumstances of his death, which soon proves to be quite dangerous.

As thrilling as it is atmospheric, The Name of the Rose, the historical crime film from 1986 created in a German-Italian-French co-production and directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, is often considered one of the most successful film adaptations of a novel in history.
