True crime series about events you haven't heard of that will give you chills

Regardless of whether they are movies, series, podcasts, or books, the true crime genre is unique due to its non-fiction quality.

As its name suggests, the stories encountered in this genre are real, and the events they describe have truly happened to someone. This reality always wraps them in an extra layer of eeriness that lingers long after consuming the true crime content.

However, the lack of fiction also makes this genre unusually captivating. If you are among its fans, you will be delighted by the excellent selection of true crime series on the streaming service Pickbox NOW! Series such as...

The Murder of Olof Palme

On a typically cold and gray Nordic evening in February 1986, after visiting the Grand cinema in the heart of Stockholm with his wife Lisbeth, Olof Palme, the twice Swedish Prime Minister and long-standing president of the Swedish Social Democratic Party, could not have known that the comedy "The Mozart Brothers" by director Suzanne Osten would be the last movie he would ever watch. His life was abruptly ended by an assassination that resonated around the world.

Years later, after extensive information gathering about the assassination and the most expensive police investigation in Swedish history, Mikael Hylin directed an excellent documentary miniseries "The Murder of Olof Palme" (Palme: The Murder Investigation) in an attempt to finally illuminate the circumstances of the brutal murder, as well as many dark corners of Stockholm's underworld. It would truly be a shame to miss it.

The Night Caller

"The Night Caller", a documentary miniseries from 2020, brings the chilling story of a notorious serial killer who terrorized the city of Perth in Western Australia during the 1950s and 1960s.

Eric Edgar Cooke, better known as The Night Visitor, committed at least twenty violent crimes during his bloody spree, eight of which resulted in needless deaths and left indelible scars, sorrow, and trauma that always follow.

In a total of four episodes, director Thomas Meadmore focused on the dark legacy of this serial killer. The series features interviews with people close to both Eric Edgar Cooke and his unfortunate victims.

Simultaneously deeply emotional, as well as disturbing and unsettling, "The Night Visitor" is not an easy series to watch, but it is precisely for that reason that it is worth watching!

Rich and Acquitted

"Rich and Acquitted," a documentary series from 2016 directed by Brent Zacky, instead of focusing on a single true story, deals with multiple cases and raises the question of whether fame and wealth can sometimes indeed buy freedom.

Exploring well-known cases such as that of O.J. Simpson, the former American football legend who may or may not have killed his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman, or the eccentric music producer Phil Spector, who was a bit too fond of playing with guns, and many others, "Rich and Acquitted" provides a deep insight into the other side of the glamorous world we otherwise have no access to, making it simply irresistible!

The Radical Story of Patty Hearst

The incredible six-part story of Patty Hearst, a wealthy heiress kidnapped in 1974 in California. Granddaughter of William Randolph Hearst, the man who virtually invented tabloids and created a media company that still exists today, Patty Hearst was kidnapped on February 4, 1974.

The kidnapping in Berkeley, California, became the catalyst for a two-year drama that captivated the nation. More than four decades later, this crime and the legal cases that stemmed from it have left more questions than answers. Patty Hearst's transformation from a kidnapped heiress to a terrorist is a saga of privilege, fame, and violence that gripped the nation. More than forty years later, firsthand reports illuminate one of the most bizarre stories in modern American history. The series explores who Patty Hearst really is: a victim or a villain?
